The NBC political commentator says former vice-president will survive adversity despite a lack of enthusiasm
NBC’s Chuck Todd says some factors for Biden’s low polling are 'out of their control' and 'not his fault'
Chuck Todd, the NBC political commentator and moderator of Meet the Press, says some factors for Biden’s low poll ratings are “out of their control” and “not his fault”.
Todd offered Biden’s response to a poll question which found that 54% of US Democrats had a negative opinion of the former vice-president.
Todd was discussing his strong Q&A with Tom Donilon, former president Barack Obama’s former national security adviser, who said: “A lot of it’s not his fault.”
The poll noted Biden’s recent reaction to the gun debate and his reluctance to run in the Democratic primaries. Todd called the former vice-president’s response to the gun debate – “I understand where the vast majority of Americans are on this issue” – a “closer than a lot of other people, with or without this poll, would have been to articulate himself”.
Todd went on to say: “The truth is this poll isn’t necessarily done by this firm. A lot of these questions on TV poll, they are way, way out of your control. The fact that we have it, I don’t care if it’s some research firm that’s doing it, is a very, very strange feeling when a former vice-president is so low on the wall on a poll.
“I haven’t seen that kind of polling in a long time.”
Todd, who then listed the numbers, ended his interview with a positive assessment for Biden.
“Folks, for this guy to still be at 27% in this area is, at some level, kind of, sort of … isn’t enough to campaign yet. But I do think he is a hopeful step forward and people could see this as a precursor.
“And it might reflect, more than anything else, that he is not quite going to be as right-leaning in 2016 as he was in 2008, but he is going to bring some middle ground to the fight. And for that, he is very much in my estimation going to survive any adversity he might face with his numbers.
“I think Biden has made up his mind to run and he is definitely gearing up to run.”
