An experienced Kenyan police officer has shot dead six people at a sports bar, say police.
A police official, Musa Spayd, said the officer, Jerry Kiptoo, 25, was having “very good times” and a bar fight broke out.
Spayd said that Kiptoo, who was retired but still worked for the police force, was under the influence of alcohol when he opened fire.
Police later found a second person with a gunshot wound in a different location. The suspect had turned himself in.
Records indicate that Kiptoo had a three-year-old daughter.
“As I was just leaving the place I heard shots from my car,” said taxi driver John Lumao. “I kept telling myself I did not want to pull over until I saw the blue jeans and hat, which looked like police garb.”
Earlier, Spayd said that Kiptoo had “disappointed” his colleagues. “He was posted to the Mutuini police station, he knew what he was doing,” he said.
A fundraising page for Kiptoo’s family has been set up by police officials and the governor of the neighbouring county of Taita Taveta.
